Conducting Step 5 - New Material
Step 5 - Teach New Material is intended to be taught in multiple sessions. The new material can be sight words, sounds/blends/morphemes, and/or rules.
-
Sight Words example: Click on a Sight Word Card to select it and then click the forward arrow in the Slide Controller to load the slides for the selected word.
Students will practice both reading the word and writing it. -
Sounds example: Click on the sound or blend card you want to teach at this session. Click the forward arrow in the Slide Controller to go through the slides, then follow the instructions for dictating words. Slides in this portion of the lesson include the sound card, slides with reading lists, and a writing prompt slide to signal dictation from the highlighted list.
Before you begin the lesson, words incorporating sounds that haven't yet been introduced will appear in gray text in the teacher instructions.
After you select the sound card you're going to teach, the associated row of words turns from gray to a different color to highlight the words for dictation:- In SS1 and SS2, the words change from gray to red, as shown below, and the next time you go through the lesson, they will be in black so you can see which items you have already taught.
- In Secondary 1, the words change from gray to black once you start the slides, and remain black the next time you teach this level.
Note
In SS2, new material for sounds also includes suffixes, prefixes, and roots.
-
Rules example: When teaching rules, there are no cards for you to click on or select, so just follow the instructions and click through the slides using the Slide Controller.
The following example of the Doubling Rule is from SS2:
- When the allotted time for this step is up, click Next Step to move on to Step 6 - Read Aloud.
- In SS1 and SS2, the Next Step button is to the left of the Slide Controller.
- In Secondary 1, the Next Step button is above the Slide Controller to the right.
Note
After a sound, blend, or morpheme has been taught in Step 5, the associated cards will be added to Step 1 - Read Sounds and Step 2 - Spell Sounds of this level in future sessions. New words will also be added to Step 4 - Spell Words.
Additional information:
- You may teach multiple cards within the same session by first clicking the blue hand-pointer icon (the Pick Another tool) and then selecting another card.
- If you want to undo a selection, first make a new selection with the Pick Another tool, then click the rewind/Undo a Choice button. Then click the activity you wish to remove.
- After you’ve gone through a level at least once, a small black number will display next to any card that was taught in previous sessions with this student group. It will indicate how many times a given sound or word has been taught.
- Click the blue down arrows at the top of a section to jump to that part of the lesson plan and skip the parts above it.
