If you wish to teach a vocabulary word that does not appear in the Word List for your class's grade level (for example, a word from a different grade level or a word relevant to something your class is learning in another subject), you can create a custom word.
To create a custom word:
- Log in to Sonday System and click WinVocab in the Products panel of your Teaching Dashboard.
- Open the drop-down menu by your name in the upper right corner of the screen and select Word Lists.
- In the top right corner, click Create Custom Word.
- Step 1 of a two-step wizard opens.
- Fill in the word and the grade level at the top of the page, then add a definition. You should also fill out the part of speech and an example sentence.
- Synonyms and antonyms are optional and should only be filled in if applicable.
- If the word has more than one definition, click a plus sign (+) to add another. You can add up to 4 definitions for each custom word.
- Click Create Word when you are done entering the information.
-
In Step 2, deselect any activities that should not be made available for your custom word, then click Submit Activities.
Caution
All activities are selected by default; you must determine and deselect the activities that are not valid for your custom word. For more information on the criteria for valid and invalid activities, see Student activity types in WinVocab.
In this example, Shades of Meaning would be difficult to apply to the word tadpole, so it's been unchecked. - Clicking Submit Activities brings you to the Custom Word Detail page. From here you can edit or remove the custom word. Click Back to List to go back to the Word List for the grade level of the custom word you just created.
- The custom word can now be found at the very end of the word list for your class's grade level. You can also quickly and easily locate it using the Search box.
