Display - Follow Along

110.1a - display options.png

Follow Along is one option for displaying student content for remote viewing. This feature is optimal for remote students who might have slower internet connections. You can also use Follow Along in the classroom to display slides from a separate device that has internet connection, such as a smart screen or students' personal devices.

 Note

Follow Along will only work for students if the class uses a Students type roster. However, you can use Follow Along as a teacher to display slides on a separate device regardless of the roster type.

Classes using Follow Along for displaying student content make use of a unique Follow Code to identify the specific class. All classes are automatically assigned Follow Codes when they are created, but it is advisable to create a shorter Follow Code for your class so it will be easier for students to type. To do this, select a class from the Classes tab on the Teaching Dashboard to open the Class Detail page and click 'Edit' in the Class Information bar.

Under Class Information, enter a Follow Code. Follow Codes are not case sensitive, but they must be globally unique and between 6 and 50 characters long.

 Note

If the code you entered is already in use by another user, you will be notified and prompted to create a new one.

Once your globally unique Follow Code has been created, click 'Submit' to update the class’s details.

Your new Follow Code will be displayed under the Follow Feature section of the Class Level Overview page when Follow Along is selected as your Display Method.

Each class’s Follow Code is accompanied by a QR code that allows for easy sharing with students. You can either allow students to scan the QR code from your teaching device one at a time or print the code for distribution in the classroom. If you change the Follow Code for your class, a new QR code will be generated and will need to be reprinted.

Students access remote content either by scanning the QR code using their device camera and selecting their name or by going to student.imaginesonday.com and entering the Follow Code.

Then, students will see the name of the class they are in as well as the teacher's display name. They can select their own name from the list of students in the class to begin following.

To use Follow Along as a teacher to display student content on a separate, student-facing display device, scan the QR code on a device camera (or go to student.imaginesonday.com and enter the class Follow Code) and click the For Teachers link in the bottom right corner. Then, enter your Follow Teacher Pin (this can be edited in My Profile) and click 'Next' to begin displaying synced student content.

When teaching a session, look for the Follow Controller bar at the bottom of the lesson plan page. The Follow Controller bar allows you to refresh or end the follow screen for the students.

Slides on devices using Follow Along will be updated as you advance through the slides using the Slide Controller.

 Note

If the connection gets disrupted, have the student click 'Exit' in the top right corner of their window, then click 'Click Here' to start over and re-enter the Follow Code. If your students used the QR code to join the session, have them click 'Exit' and use the QR code again to rejoin.

You can set Follow Along as your default display method for student content in all Sonday products under Digital Settings in My Profile.

You can switch to Follow Along as your Display Method during any class session. Your Follow Code will be displayed if Follow Along is selected, but not if if you have a different Display Method selected. Changing your Display Method during a lesson will override the default Display Method, and that setting will be remembered for that specific class next time you teach.
