Marking errors and scoring assessments in Sonday System 1 & 2

As mentioned in Administering assessments in the digital platform, the teacher instructions for each step will tell you how to mark incorrect answers for each section. To save time, only incorrect answers need to be noted; if a response is not specifically marked as incorrect, the system automatically scores it as correct.

To mark incorrect assessment answers in the digital platform:

  1. In some assessment segments, you'll mark incorrect responses by clicking each response the student gets wrong. After you click an incorrect item (the letters "w" and "q" in example below), the item will appear red with a strikethrough. If you mark an error by mistake, clear the mark by clicking the item again before moving on to the next step.

  2. In other sections, you will mark incorrect items by clicking the X next to that item.

  3. Always click Save & Next Step to move on to the next section of an assessment.
  4. Follow the specific assessment instructions for skipping to the next section if a student misses a certain number of words in a row. It is especially important to pause testing and manually mark all subsequent items in that list as incorrect before clicking Stop Here, Skip Remaining, & Go To Next Step. In the example below, the student missed items 6–9. Because the instructions say to stop testing and go to the next step if a student misses four words in a row, no further testing was conducted with this student and the remaining items were also marked incorrect.

  5. During writing portions, have the student show you each word after they write it (or collect their papers) so you can evaluate each response as correct or incorrect.
During reading portions, mark items as incorrect if pronounced incorrectly or if no answer is given. In the Placement Tests only, the reading portion includes an optional field to record the incorrect pronunciation of the word, which may help inform where to begin instruction. The Sonday System 1 and 2 Placement Tests have an additional step for recording words that are incorrectly read—when a student reads a word incorrectly, first click the X and then click the blank field and type in the incorrect response. In the example below, the student read word 4, crush, incorrectly as cruss, so the blank was filled in accordingly. This allows you to come back later and review student errors and look for patterns or assess what you need to reteach.
